FAQs

·        Can I obtain an internship if I am not a student?

o       In order to obtain an internship in the USA you need to possess a visa.  Internship USA will manage the visa J-1 for those students who have an offer.  In order to qualify for the visa you need to be a student or have finished your studies within 6 months of beginning the internship.

·        Do I need to pay for the visa?

o       The processing of a visa usually costs between 500-1500 euros, depending on the length of the internship.  This cost includes processing and job insurance of accidents and trips during your stay in the USA.

·        Will I have access to one of the scholarships that Internship USA grants?

o       Internship USA will offer some scholarships that will cover the costs of the visa, the journey to the US Embassy in Madrid and the cost that the embassy charges for the interview.  Internship USA will assign the scholarships in order of the applications.  In order to request a scholarship you need to have an acceptance or offer from the company.

·        Should I limit my internship search to the companies that are listed?

o       No, the companies listed are only some options, but there are many others.  Even more, the majority of students will send their information to the companies that are listed, which makes these internships very competitive.

·        Are the search engines useful in the internship search?

o       Search engines are some of the most useful tools to search for an internship.  They allow you to search a specific geographic region and by which areas of study you are interested in!  We advise you to not limit your searches to specific geographical regions.  The internship will be amazing regardless of where it is located.

·        How can the newspapers help me?

o       Internship USA offers you an extensive list of the most prestigious newspapers in the USA.  The links will connect you to the work section of each newspaper and will permit you to search for employment in the cities where they are published.  Sometimes they only offer full-time jobs and not internships, but this will still help you to find the companies that are offering jobs.  Why not offer yourself as an intern?

·        What should I say to a company where I would like to work but doesn’t offer internships?

o       In first place, remember that you should send your CV and cover letter and make sure that it mentions why you want to work at their company.  Many companies would be crazy to not want an intern, but they don’t offer internships because they think that processing a visa would be difficult.  For this reason, make sure that you mention that CIEE will process the visa and that your university will recognize the internship as part of your academic record.

·        Will I receive money for my internship?

o       Not all of the companies will offer to pay you.  Sometimes they will offer a place to live, sometimes food, sometimes flight, and sometimes they offer nothing.  Remember that the more well-known and important a company is the more difficult it will be to receive compensation.  Nevertheless, remember that an internship in the USA is an investment that will differentiate you from the rest of the people competing to work in Spain and will open many doors to Spanish companies for you.
